An intense storm was quickly passing ove the Superstition Mtns, changing light and landscape objects within seconds. As I chased it I encountered this massive Saguaro cactus who seemed to have no fear.

Made it to the top of my roof just in time to catch this January moon setting over the top of mtn. It just happened to be lined up perfectly with the Saguaro cactus.

This cactus has endured some bouts of cold over the course of its life. The arms droop when desert temps gets too cold but recover and turn upward when it warms up. Thanks to Debbie JoeDicker for that bit of knowledge.

In the year following my grandfathers death I waited in my Gold Canyon backyard before dawn for a sunrise photo in honor of him. I was unaware that a military test facility, east of AZ in White Sands New Mexico was conducting missile testing in the dawn hours. Seeing the contrails of the missile vapors in the eastern sky as the sun began to rise I was convinced it was a message from my grandfather. He was a military man and if he wanted to send me a message what clearer way ? For years this photo which was made on 35mm slide film and printed without photoshop was my best-selling photograph. The colors you see are as real as his love for me.

I had not intended to combine these 2 slides but when they accidentally slid over eachother on the light table the match was so perfect I knew it had to be. The silhouette was made of a cowboy friend at dusk and the lightning storm during AZ monsoons. Available in limited print sizes, up to 30×40 canvas.
